So many times we have been caught in the trap of scrolling on our phones for hours. It started with a video that we were mildly interested in and then 20 mins later, we’re watching a clip of how to train a giraffe to do a backflip…….
Take OWNERSHIP of what you see!
Facebook: UNFOLLOW (you don’t have to unfriend) EVERYONE/PAGE that doesn’t have a direct benefit to your viewing.
A few pages with memes and a few good friends can stay on, but all the pages that you’ve accumulated over the year as a casual like here and there that have accumulated.
Click the arrow on the far right of the blue facebook bar, click news feed preference and work your way through each of those settings.
We all know that facebook uses algorithms and formulas to decide what to show us, if you don’t follow that many people, the maths doesn’t know what to send us and then we don’t get manipulated (woohoo!!)
Instagram: MUTE (or unfollow if you really want to) everyone that doesn’t make a difference to you! You go onto their account, click ‘following’ then click ‘mute’ and you can stop yourself from seeing stories and/or posts. The account won’t get notified (so no one will get annoyed at you) and then it will mean that you get that little message “You’re all caught up!” once you’ve scrolled through everything that’s truly an addition to your life.
There are heaps of amazing people out there, educational pages and great ideas on the internet. But the large majority are time sucks. These platforms use the same behavioural logic as gambling and it can have that effect on us! By removing the negative accounts and personalities from the content we see, we’re able to benefit from social media! You can do this as a bulk project (which will take about 10-20mins) or do it progressively – as you see something that isn’t preferable for your viewing, get rid of them there and then!
Good luck team!
